10 most memorable moments from the 2012 WSOP Part 2
The 2012 World Series of Poker is now officially in the books, ending with the thrilling final table performance that saw Greg Merson crowned as the 2012 WSOP Champion. In this 2-part series I’ll take a look back at the complete 2012 WSOP (from Las Vegas to Cannes) and list the 10 most memorable moments form the tournament series.
Some of the moments I have chosen are singular events, while others are more about the totality of the WSOP tournament series, but for me these are the 10 most memorable moments of the WSOP. Here is a look at the final 5 memorable moments:
#5 The Year of the Woman
The 2012 World Series of Poker saw woman have their best year at the WSOP perhaps in the history of the tournament series. In addition to Baumann and Hille making as super deep run in the Main Event, it seemed women were at virtually every final table. With wins in the $1k Seniors Championship (Allyn Jaffrey-Shulman) and Vanessa Selbst winning the first open-event bracelet for the ladies since 2008 (when Vanessa Selbst won the last open-event bracelet), one of the main storylines for the 2012 WSOP was definitely the “Year of the Woman”.
#4 Marathon Final Table
It’s going to be hard to forget the 12-hour showdown the final three competitors were part of in the 2012 WSOP Main Event, and my guess is that ten years from now when people talk about the 2012 WSOP the response will be, “That was the year I went to sleep and when I woke up the final table was still going!”
#3 Greg Merson
As Norman Chad often says, “He’s just a kid with a dream.” Merson put his poker skills on display at the WSOP and pretty much “Arrived” in the poker world with his WSOP performance. Not only did Merson win the Main Event, he also won the $10k Six-Max tournament and in the process the WSOP Player of the Year award.
Of all the recent WSOP winners, Merson seems to be the most likely to go on from here and continue to rack-up big wins in poker.
#2 Phil Hellmuth cements his place in WSOP lore
Two bracelets and two consecutive years finishing in second place for the WSOP Player of the Year award pretty much cements the “Poker Brat’s” legacy at the WSOP. Hellmuth now has 13 bracelets, including a Main Event and WSOP Europe Main Event win, as well as holding virtually every WSOP record from cashes to final tables –and in most of these categories second-place is not even close.
#1 The Big One for One Drop
The real “moment” of the 2012 WSOP has to be the Big One for One Drop. This tournament exceeded all expectations and basically stopped the poker world in its tracks while it was going on. Virtually every mainstream media outlet covered the story; making One Drop the most memorable 2012 WSOP moment.
