2010 World Series of Poker Main Event Day 1b report

After Day 1a of the 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event drew a strong, but unimpressive field of 1,125 poker players, Day 1b of the Main Event saw a total of 1,489 players take to the poker tables at the Rio. However, attendance is way up over last year’s numbers of 1,116 and 873 respectively -but it’s important to note that Day 1a and 1b in 2009 fell on the 4th of July holiday weekend.

Of the nearly 1,500 player who participated yesterday 1,021 of them will return on July 10th where they will be combined with the survivors from Day 1d -the remaining players from Day 1a and Day 1c will play on July 9th.

Day 1b had quite a few pro poker player sightings, and unfortunately for UB Poker Pros Liv Boeree and Joe Sebok; Full Tilt Poker’s Erick Lindgren; Justin Bonomo; Team PokerStars pro Bertrand “ElkY” Grosspiellier; and 2006 Main Event Champion Jamie Gold, the 2010 WSOP is officiallyover; but there’s always next year!

Some of the big names who thrived on Day 1b were Dan “djk123″ Kelly, fresh off his massive win in the $25k 6-Max tournament which locked up a spot on the Brunson 10 for the 21 year-old poker pro; Alexander Kostritsyn; Kido Pham; Phil Laak, who thankfully will not have to play 100 hours straight to win the WSOP Main Event; Brandon Cantu; Main Event Champion and three-time Final Table participant Dan Harrington; and Gavin Smith who broke through earlier at the 2010 WSOP and won his first bracelet.

With WSOP officials hoping to break the 7,000 entrant mark things are looking good -the 2009 WSOP would have topped 7,000 had hundreds of players not been turned away on Day 1d, something the pre-registration format will hopefully fix this time around. After two starting days in 2009 a total of 1,989 players had registered for the tournament; already in 2010 a total of 2,614 players have entered the WSOP Main Event. So the final two starting days will only need to average around 2,200 entrants to break 7,000 -and it’s almost assured that Day 1d will hit its 3,000 player cap.
