Canada’s favorite poker player (?) Daniel Negreanu, just took down the British Columbia Poker Championship this past Sunday. This was the second largest poker tournament held this year in Canada, trailing only the World Poker Tour and it’s North American Poker Championship event that was hosted at the Falls View Casino at Niagara Falls. A record field of 689 poker hopefuls either won their way in via satellite or paid the $2,500 Canadian entry fee to play in the tournament.
With a solid field of local players and big names such as Dennis Phillips (one of the World Series of Poker’s November Nine players), Daniel admitted that it was a very competitive field, indeed: “Being Canadian myself, playing and winning the B.C. Poker Championships is extra special to me. The tournament was extremely well organized and my opponents were very good. It may have been a smaller tournament, but I would say this has been the best $2500 buy-in event structure I’ve ever played.”
For his troubles he’s taking home $371,910 in Canada monies, which is pretty powerful now versus the US dollar, so he may actually spend the winnings on Canadian male prostitutes as opposed to the US versions. A total of 60 players from the 600+ field cashed in the event. Also cashing in the event was Dennis Phillips for $8,543 and Steve Paul-Ambrose for $6,931.
