Elite 8 set at Heads-Up Poker Championship

After two days of play, and three matches a piece, one of the eight remaining players in the 2011 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship taking place at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada, is three matches away from hoisting the trophy in the air; not to mention walking off with $750,000 in first-place prize-money.

Every player who made the Sweet Sixteen by winning their first match yesterday was awarded with $30,000 in prize-money, and for making the Elite 8, Olivier Busquet, Jonathan Duhamel, Chris Moneymaker, David Oppenheim, Andrew Robl, David Benyamine, Vanessa Selbst, and Erik Seidel are all guaranteed a minimum of $75,000.

Here is a look at the upcoming matches in the Elite 8:

  • Olivier Busquet vs. Jonathan Duhamel

Winner to play the winner of

  • Andrew Robl vs. David Benyamine

Winner to play the winner of

  • Vanessa Selbst vs. Erik Seidel

Busquet, an online Sit and Go legend and high-stakes cash-game player was a late addition to the lineup, taking the place of Johnny Chan who withdrew for unknown reasons. Busquet defeated Dwyte Pilgrim in his opening round match, followed by two Team PokerStars Pros in Liv Boeree and Jason Mercier to get to this point.

Busquet’s next opponent is the reigning WSOP Champion, Jonathan Duhamel, who has proven to be on one-trick-pony after his WSOP win. Duhamel bested online qualifier Melburn Whitmire, Antonio Esfandiari, and 2010 WSOP Heads-Up Champion Ayaz Mahmood on his path to the Elite 8.

Moneymaker is probably the best known player in the field and probably has the longest odds against him -still no respect for this guy. On his way to the Quarterfinals Moneymaker has bested John Racener, poker’s top young gun Daniel Cates, and poker’s living legend Doyle Brunson.

Moneymaker finds himself pitted against high-stakes poker pro David Oppenheim who was able to get by 2009 POY Eric Baldwin, Carlos Mortensen, and Eugene Katchalov on his way to the Elite 8.

Robl was a late, late, addition who took the place of David “Viffer” Peat (who was taking the place of Howard Lederer). His path to the Quarterfinals was arguably the easiest and includes wins over Kara Scott and Emmitt Smith, before playing an actual poker player in the Sweet Sixteen round, 2010 WSOPE champion James Bord.
