Introduction
At the current moment in time, Full Tilt Ubuntu is nonexistent. In other words, Full Tilt Poker has not created a specific version of their software that will work directly inside the Ubuntu operating system. There are however two solutions that you can employ if you would like to combine Full Tilt Poker and Ubuntu. The first is a way to actually play Full Tilt Poker in Ubuntu and the second is a way to be able to quickly switch back and forth between those two operating systems.
WINE
WINE is the first solution and it is probably the better of the two. It is better than the second solution because it not only allows you to actually play Full Tilt Poker inside Ubuntu, but it also allows you to use basically any other Windows software inside the Ubuntu operating system.
How exactly does WINE work? You can think of it as a local Windows emulator, although from a technical standpoint this is not the most accurate description that could be put forth. Nevertheless, WINE will allow you to run Windows programs on Ubuntu and that makes it a very popular and very precious software package. It is essentially exactly what you need to make your Full Tilt Ubuntu dream come true as well, which is why it is important for the purposes of this article.
In order to get things going through the use of WINE, you need to download it for Ubuntu and then install it inside Ubuntu. Once that has been completed, you should then download the normal Full Tilt Poker package and run it as you would if you were installing it inside your Windows operating system. The WINE software that you just installed should then allow you to run Full Tilt Poker because that is what WINE does.
Ubuntu Inside Windows
For some people, WINE might not be a viable option for one reason or another. Well, unfortunately WINE is the only way that currently exists for you to run Full Tilt Poker inside Ubuntu. If you send an e-mail to Full Tilt Poker requesting a WINE software package, you might just be able to convince them to speed up development slightly.
Your second option if you have rejected the WINE option is to install your Ubuntu operating system inside a larger Windows operating system. If you go back to your Ubuntu installation CD, you will see that this is indeed one of the options. If you do this, you will set up a parallel desktop situation with one desktop running Ubuntu and the other running Windows. This will allow you to switch back and forth between Ubuntu and Windows Full Tilt Poker.
It is not actually running Full Tilt Poker in Ubuntu, but it is the next best thing. And quite frankly, it is your only option if you have made a conscious decision not to use WINE. As of the time of writing in middle 2009, the only way to run Full Tilt Poker in Ubuntu is to use WINE or a similar software package.
