With 32 of the 61 scheduled tournaments now in the books at the 2012 World Series of Poker I thought it would be a good time to take a look at the 2012 World Series of Poker Player of the Year Award (WSOP POY for short).

The WSOP POY award will not only encompass all 61 events at the 2012 WSOP in Las Vegas, but also the tournaments at the 2012 WSOP Europe that will take place in Cannes, France this September –the final POY points will be awarded in October when the October Nine reconvene at the Rio in Las Vegas to play for the 2012 WSOP Main Event title.

Here is a look at the current Top 25 players on the 2012 WSOP POY leader-board, brought to you by the WSOP and Bluff Magazine:

  1. John Monnette — 524.25 points
  2. Phil Ivey — 494.70 points
  3. Andrew Frankenberger — 384.66 points
  4. Phil Hellmuth — 368.70 points
  5. Brian Hastings — 303.00 points
  6. David (Bakes) Baker — 302.00 points
  7. Ashkan Razavi — 274.06 points
  8. Aubin Cazals — 251.00 points
  9. Michael Gathy — 250.00 points
  10. Clifford Goldkind — 240.00 points
  11. Simon Charette — 237.50 points
  12. Timothy Adams — 236.88 points
  13. John Brock Parker — 231.99 points
  14. Matt Matros — 231.25 points
  15. Brent Hanks — 230.00 points
  16. Kennii Nguyen — 228.50 points
  17. Vincent Van der Fluit — 227.50 points
  18. Mark Radoja — 215.00 points
  19. Brandon Cantu — 214.75 points
  20. Austin (Gabe) Scott — 212.50 points
  21. Adam Friedman — 210.00 points
  22. Joe Cassidy — 210.00 points
  23. Barry Greenstein — 208.88 points
  24. Jason Mo — 204.75 points
  25. Todd Brunson — 204.10 points

Although it is more complicated than what I will list below, basically players receive a set amount of points based on their performance in an event. Players receive POY points for each cash they make, and more points the further up the pay-scale they make it (all the way up to 100 points for winning the tournament). Bluff Magazine also uses a buy-in and an entrant’s multiplier to reward players who do well in large field tournaments and in tournaments with large buy-ins.

Here is the basic breakdown of how the points are awarded prior to the multipliers being added:

Finishing Pos Points
1 100
2 70
3 50
4 44
5 38
6 33
7 28
8 24
9 20
remaining top 20% 15
next 30% 10
bottom 50% 5

The Main Event is calculated using a different formula that does not include buy-in and field size multipliers, and there are small discrepancies for short-handed tournaments, Stud events, and other non-Holdem tournaments.
