As more and more players are making the move away from conventional Sit & Go tournaments towards Turbos -since you can play more games in a shorter period of time, which not only increase your profit, but also your rakeback totals– I have noticed that many of these players are trying to take the same skill set to Turbos as they implemented in the standard Sit & Go structure.
When it comes to Turbo Sit & Go poker tournaments there are two things you need to do in order to be successful:
- 1. Get to the 75/150 level!
- 2. Get to the 75/150 level with as many chips as possible!
The reason it’s so important to get to the 75/150 level is that this is where the money bubble starts to come into play, regardless of whether there are 4 players remaining or 8! Actually, the more players remaining the more effective your smaller, or larger, stack can be at this point.
75/150 with a small stack >1,200
If you find yourself at the 75/150 level with a stack below 1,200 chips your goal is simple: Find a good spot to take down the blinds or possibly double-up! As long as you have 750+ chips you’re opponents should still respect a raise from you, since your raise should represent a decent portion of their stack -even a player with 2,500 chips doesn’t want to gamble facing the possibility of dropping down to 1,750 chips at this level!
With a 1,000 chip-stack, stealing the blinds at this level adds over 20% to your stack, and you should have cultivated a fairly tight image by this point in the tournament.
75/150 with a medium stack 1,500 to 2,500
With a medium sized stack you have the most to think about: How many players are left? What are their stacks? And so on. You’ll want to be more selective with your steals, since you are capable of losing a few blinds and still having a workable stack -this is not an option when you have 1,100 chips! However, you can’t play super-tight, and you should attack the players who are slightly below you in chips, but not so low as to be desperate.
75/150 with a large stack <3,000
With this type of stack you want to keep building for the win, and you do this by attacking the medium stacks that are waiting for the short-stacks to bust. There blinds are ripe for the picking, since they will need a very strong hand to call a raise from a player who could bust them.
You don’t want to get wildly aggressive, but you should be looking for any spot to attack players with medium sized stacks -especially if you have a stack of over 4,500 that can withstand losing a big pot and still be in good shape.
