The 10 best things in poker during 2011 Part 1
The following is a list of 10 things that put a smile on my face in what has been a rather morose year for online poker, and poker on the whole. The list covers a variety of topics from results, to ad-libbed comments, to misadventures, and even a fail-story.
1. The Micros takes the sting out of Black Friday
Even though the online poker community has had a black cloud hanging over its head since April 15th, that hasn’t stopped Jay Rosenkrantz and John Wray from parodying the online poker world in their animated series The Micros. They even had time to fire-off a quick episode on Black Friday with the apt theme of the Titanic sinking!
2. Srsly Sirius goes Weird Al on the poker world
Not only have we seen The Micros go from Busto to Robusto with their animated poker series, but we’ve also seen Thomas “SrslySirius” Keeling bring a Weird Al Yankovic vibe to the poker world with his song parodies.
Keeling doesn’t hold back when he parodies some of the poker world’s biggest stars, and much like a Weird Al cover, it seems to be taken as an honor of you make it into a SrslySirius music video!
3. Erik Seidel: Master of the Super-High-Roller domain
All comedy aside, has anyone ever had a run like Erik Seidel’s 2011? Even more amazing is that Seidel is dominating the High-Roller and Super-High-Roller tournaments that have become all the rage in 2011.
As of August 23rd, 2011 Erik Seidel has won $6.2 million in poker tournaments for the year! Nobody has pocketed that much loot in a single year without a top 3 finish in the WSOP Main Event in the history of poker. Seidel has now earned $16.6 million in career tournament earnings, well ahead of Daniel Negreanu who is sitting in second place, nearly $2 million behind “Seiborg” (see SrslySirius’ collaboration with the Micros for more on “Seiborg”).
4. Daniel Cates Excellent Canadian Adventure
Ok, this one is just downright funny. It appears Daniel Cates, better known as “jungleman12″ in the online poker world, didn’t realize it was a bad idea to tell the border patrol that his reason for moving to the country was to play online poker -basically saying, “I’m coming to Canada to work illegally!”
Cates was turned away at the border -surprise, surprise-and quickly took to Twitter to ask for advice on Visas. He would later settle on Portugal, which also turned out to be a bust, but for an entirely different set of reasons.
So even though “jungleman” was involved in one of the biggest online poker scandals of the year, his most excellent Canadian adventure will likely go down in poker lore for what NOT to say when crossing a border.
5. Ben Lamb runs good; like really good; like really, really, REALLY GOOD
If Erik Seidel runs good in big-buy-in, small-field, poker tournaments, than Ben “Benba” Lamb is the poster-boy for “Run-Good” when it comes to big field World Series of Poker events. All Lamb did at the 2011 WSOP was win the $10k PLO Championship, finish 2nd in the $3k PLO event, Final table the $50k Players Championship, and made the November Nine in the WSOP Main Event! Oh, there was also a 12th place finish in another WSOP tournament to boot!
