In today’s poker world it’s hard to remain an anonymous background figure, but there are a few poker players who have been able to avoid being called “The Next Big Thing” or find their every exploit endlessly discussed on the online poker forums. The ten players I have chosen are definitely well-known in the poker community, but in my opinion do not receive the credit they deserve. Here are the criteria I used for selection:
- Must have multiple years of experience
- Must be considered a top player by their peers
- Must be overlooked when players discuss “The best players”
Here are my final 5 selections for the top 10 Poker Pros that are flying under the radar.
- Tom Marchese
Marchese, the former online poker cash game grinder, has been one of the top performing tournament players in recent years, and the online phenom is now tearing up the live poker circuit. In his first year on the tournament circuit Marchese, who goes by the online handle “KingofCards” has over $1.6 million in winnings, and is atop the Card Player Magazine POY leader-board.
- Di Dang
Di “URinDanger” Dang is one of the most feared online cash game players. Dang regularly takes on the best players in the world -at the highest stakes in the world-and has earned over $6 million at the nosebleed tables for his career. Dang is one of the most consistent high-stakes performers in poker.
- Hac Dang
Hac “trex313″ Dang is not surprisingly Di Dang’s brother, and the two form what is perhaps the most fearsome family duo in poker. Hac plays far less volume than his brother Di, but his results are very close; Hac is $5.5 million in the black for his poker career.
- JC Tran
Tran is one of the more prolific tournament players in poker; if there is a major tournament happening, chances are JC Tran is there! Tran has been around the poker tournament circuit since 2003, and has racked up an impressive $8 million in career tournament earnings. Tran has 2 WSOP bracelets and a WPT title on his resume, as well as winning the 2006 WCOOP Main Event on PokerStars.
- David Oppenheim
Oppenheim is one of the few players who are able to wander anonymously into and out of Bobby’s Room at the Bellagio. A regular in the highest stakes cash games in the world, Oppenheim also has nearly $1.4 million in tournament winnings to his credit, but the bulk of success has come in cash games.
