Thursday was another big day at the World Series of Poker, and the Poker Pros definitely made their presence felt at the Rio poker tables.
Event #17: $5,000 No Limit Holdem
Poker pro Jason DeWitt captured his first WSOP bracelet, along with a massive $818,000 in prize-money, in Event #17. DeWitt went into the day with the chip-lead and was able to come out on top despite a number of top players gunning to take him down.
Finishing 5th in the event was online poker player Amit Makhija, poker pro David Benefield finished in 6th place, and Perry Friedman and Antonio Esfandiari just missed the final table, finishing 10th and 12th respectively.
Event #18: $2,000 Limit Holdem
The final table is unofficially set with 10 players returning on Friday, the official final table will not be set until nine players remain. The big story of the tournament is Matt Matros who is going for his second WSOP win in 2010, his first coming in the $1,500 Limit event.
Matros will have his work cut out for him as he attempts to chase down chip-leader Eric Buchman. Buchman is looking for his first WSOP win, and is best known for making the 2009 WSOP Main Event final table, bowing out in 4th place.
Event #19: $10,000 No Limit 2-7 Draw Lowball
Another tournament that was pared down to 10 players was the 2-7 Championship, and what a 10 players it is! With names like Erik Seidel, John Juanda, and Daniel Negreanu, and their 17 combined WSOP bracelets among the remaining 10 players. Not to mention Andy Bloch, Eric Cloutier, John Monnette, and David Baker.
Juanda has a chance to appear at his 3rd final table of the 2010 WSOP, and could tie Vladimir Schmelev with three final tables in three championship events.
Negreanu is making his first deep run at the 2010 WSOP after what he describes on his blog as his worst start ever at the WSOP.
Seidel has a chance to pick up his 9th bracelet which would tie him with the legendary Johnny Moss, and put him in spitting distance of the all-time record currently held by Phil Hellmuth at 11.
Event #20: $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha
With 885 players taking to the tables it’s safe to say that PLO is fast becoming the second most popular poker variant.
In typical PLO fashion, by the end of the day 1 only 95 player remained in the field, with some of the biggest names in poker heading the leader-board: Jonathan Little, Christian CHarder” Harder, Tex Barch, and Nenad Medic all in the top 5!
Also still in the running are James Akenhead, Scott Montgomery, Ted Lawson, Blair Rodman, Nick Binger, Robert Williamson III, Jay Heimowitz, Jason Mercier, Matt Stout and Chris Bjorin.
Event #21: $1,500 Seven Card Stud
Also getting underway yesterday was the $1,500 7 Card Stud tournament. 408 players turned out for the tournament and by the end of the day the field had shrunk to just 128 players. A number of big names are still in the running including chip-leader Scott Seiver, and Carlos Mortensen who is sitting in 5th place.
