The 2010 World Series of Poker was dubbed “The Year of the Woman” before the tournament started, and up to this point they haven’t disappointed. While the ladies have been shut out thus far in terms of bracelets in just 23 events they have two 3rd place finishes (JJ Liu and Jennifer Harman) and a 2nd place finish yesterday by Christine Pietsch; no to mention JJ Liu is once again in the final 12 of the 6-Max Limit Holdem tournament that will conclude today.

Event #20: $1,500 Pot Limit Omaha

In a tough final table that included Nenad Medic and Blair Rodman it was fellow poker pro, and 2005 WSOP Main Event 3rd place finisher, John “Tex” Barch who picked up his 1st WSOP bracelet. Medic held a sizeable chip-lead for most of the day, but a bad-run at the worst of times sealed his fate, and the Canadian poker pro finished in 4th place.

Event #21: $2,000 Seven Card Stud

It looked like we would see our first female champion in 2010 as Christine Pietsch took a huge chip-lead into heads-up play with online poker pro Richard Ashby, but Ashby was able to overcome the deficit, denying Pietsch, and claiming his first WSOP bracelet. Ashby is now the third Brit to win a WSOP bracelet at the 2010 WSOP.

Dan Heimiller, who is running really well at the 2010 WSOP, finished the tournament in 4th place, giving the longtime poker pro three final tables at the 2010 WSOP.

Online poker superstar Sorel Mizzi was also in the hunt for his first WSOP win, but the Canadian finished in 6th place.

Event #22: $1,000 Ladies No Limit Holdem

The final table is set in the ladies tournament, and we’ll have a first-time bracelet winner when the day is over. With 9 relatively unknown players remaining its anyone’s guess as to who will take home the bracelet and the $192k first-place prize-money.

Event #23: $2,500 6-Handed Limit Holdem

The 6-Handed tournament is down to the final two tables, and once again JJ Liu is in the mix, making her second deep-run at the 2010 WSOP -Liu finished 3rd in Event #9-so perhaps with the Ladies Championship concluding today as well, two women will win bracelets on Sunday!

Liu will have to deal with some stiff competition to win that bracelet, including chip-leader Al Barbieri, and the enigmatic Dutch Boyd who seems to find enough times in between scandals and lawsuits to make it to the WSOP each year.

Event #24: $1,000 No Limit Holdem

The latest $1k tournament got underway yesterday, and with the number of entrants trending downwards, Day 1a drew a solid 1,931 entrants -just over 3,000 players total entered the last $1k tournament.

So far this year, Day 2 has been the smaller registration day, so we’ll keep an eye on how many players turn out on Sunday.

Event #25: $10,000 Omaha 8 or better World Championship

212 players decided to plunk down the $10k entrant’s fee for the tournament, most of them professional poker players. At the end of play 164 players remained. One notable player every poker fan is keeping their eyes on is Tom Dwan. Unfortunately Dwan busted on day 1.
