With so much action happening at the Rio I’ve decided to break up my daily reports into two pieces. In Part 2 I will provide you with updates from the events still in progress: For information on the events that concluded check out Part 1 of the WSOP recap for Day 6.

Event #6: $5,000 NLHE Shootout

Among the 36 players returning for Day 2 of Event #6 were some of the biggest names in all of poker, including Tom Dwan, Chino Rheem, John Duthie, and Dario Minieri. Alas, all of those players and then some fell by the wayside.

The final 6 players will take to the tables later today to declare a champion and unlike most WSOP events where the players go in with a differing number of chips, the shootout format means the players will be on equal ground –each possessing 900,000 chips. Amazingly there are three Brits squaring off against three Americans in the event!

The final 7 players are:

  • Stuart Ritter
  • Neil Channing
  • Nicholas Levi
  • Joseph Elpayaa
  • Brent Hanks
  • Joshua Tiernan
  • Event #7: $1,500 2-7 Triple Draw

Another event that looked to have a stacked final table was the Triple Draw 2-7 event. Thanks to the scarcity of the poker variant in all but the highest stakes games there was a heavy professional bias among the 291 entrants, but yet again it was the semi-professional and amateur who wreaked havoc on the big names, and with 8 players remaining only chip-leader David Chiu is a recognizable name to the masses.

Falling short of the final table were Ted Forrest, Eli Elezra, Allen Kessler, Greg Mueller, Hoyt Corkins, and David Singer who all cashed in the event.

The final 8 players and their chip counts are:

David Chiu –436,000
Peter Gelencser –400,000
Don McNamara –370,000
Ralph Zimmerman –262,000
Ted Jurgens –223,000
Leonard Martin –195,000
Shunjiro Unchida –173,000
Jameson Painter –127,000
Event #8: $1,500 NLHE

The only event that began yesterday was the second $1,500 No limit Holdem tournament, which attracted 2,331 hopefuls. The three day event is already down to 270 players with a few notable names near the top of the leader-board:

  • Jean-Robert Bellande – 13th place with 89,200 chips
  • Nick Binger –15th place with 85,600 chips
  • Phil Hellmunth –16th place with 84,700 chips

Hellmuth has made a few deep runs in tournaments at this year’s WSOP in search of his 12th gold bracelet which would give him a little more breathing room against Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan who both have 10 bracelets. However, there is still a lot of poker left to be played in this event, and Phil always has a target on his back from both other professionals and amateurs alike.
