Phil Ivey is the best poker player alive

We all hear the pro say that if they had only one player to choose, they would put their money in Phil Ivey. The funny thing is the general public rarely sees Phil win a big tournament!
Phil has 8 Final Tables in WPT events, and 1 win. He also has 6 WSOP bracelets (he won #6 mere days ago) but none of these bracelets are in Texas Hold’ Em, with a couple of exceptions Hold’ Em is the only poker variant on television.
Phil’s real reputation as the best player in the world is born of being a tremendous cash game player, making millions each year at the tables; but these are tables the average Tom, Dick and Harry never see. His tournament success is secondary to him; cash games are his bread and butter.
His proficiency in cash games can be seen in his WSOP bracelets: 6 bracelets in 5 different forms of poker. And if you want to be a superstar that plays the nosebleed games with Doyle and Co. you better have a good grasp on just about every form of poker, because you never know what mixture of games you’ll be playing from night to night.
In these Ultra-High Stakes games a lot of time is spent arguing deciding what games to play in the rotation. It’s a well known fact that if Sammy Farha is playing you can count on PLO being among the games played. Every player has favored games, and they all fight tooth and nail to get those games included in the rotation.
Phil is a 7 Card Stud beast, has won 2 PLO bracelets, and has 2 mixed event bracelets to his name. He’s also final tabled multiple H.OR.S.E. tournaments.
No one, no one is playing higher stakes, or doing better in those games than Ivey. How high will Ivey play? In February 2006, he played heads-up Limit Texas Hold’ Em versus Texas billionaire Andy Beal. With stakes at $25,000/$50,000, Ivey won over $16,000,000 over the course of three days.
You can argue that some other player is the best in the world, and you can probably give valid reasons why you think so. If I could choose one player to back it would be the easiest decision I ever made: Ivey for the win! The only argument you can make against Ivey is that he hasn’t captured the Main Event, but if he ever does the debate will be over.
