Ten players who failed to meet expectations at the 2011 WSOP Part 2
Every World Series of Poker sees a number of players come out of nowhere, or rise from the ashes of poker purgatory, but there is also the other side of the coin, with a number of players who come into the WSOP with huge expectations heaped upon them -sometimes self-imposed– that fail to deliver. While this says nothing about their ability at a poker table it still makes for an interesting story!
So here are the final five of the 10 players who failed to live up to expectation at the 2011 WSOP:
- Daniel Cates - Cates was supposed to have a coming out party at the 2011 WSOP, and while I know he was in Vegas throughout the WSOP, I had a hard time finding his name on any Day 2 seating chart -honestly I couldn’t even tell you if he played a full schedule or not! Cates was blanked at the 2011 WSOP, so his coming out party may be on hold until 2012.
- Daniel Negreanu - Negreanu is the leader of the group of players who puts a lot of pressure on themselves to perform at the WSOP, and unfortunately for Kid Poker he wasn’t able to show-off his newfound commitment to bettering himself as a poker player. Negreanu finished the 2011 WSOP -he is still alive heading into Day 3 of the Main Event-with two cashes totaling less than $30k.
- Annette Obrestad - Obrestad was blanked at the 2011 WSOP, perhaps making her performance one of the most disappointing of all the players I have listed. Like Negreanu, Annette is still alive heading into Day 3 of the Main Event, a tournament that can erase a lot of bad results should you make the final table!
- Phil Ivey - Ivey decided to sit out the 2011 WSOP, although his Facebook posts explaining why have come under extreme scrutiny. Much like Lederer and Ferguson, I would have rather seen Ivey just show up at the WSOP and take whatever lumps were sent his way by the other players -he makes the list for taking the run and hide approach to the current Full Tilt Poker problem.
- Erik Seidel -Considering the year Erik Seidel has had so far big things were expected from Seiborg at the WSOP, alas Seidel could only manage five small cashes and no final tables -five cashes is no small feat by any means, but this is Erik SEIDEL we are talking about here! Seidel played a very full schedule at the WSOP, with his best result being a $32k score in the $10k Stud 8 Championship.
