Following on the heels of my recent 5 Best PLO books article I’ve decided to keep going with the theme of separating poker books into categories, and the next genre I will look at is Limit Holdem.
Limit Holdem books were, for many years, the most abundant poker books available -before 2003 Limit Holdem was king in the casinos around the world, before the No Limit Holdem explosion took hold. So, it’s quite likely that if you began playing poker before about 2006 the first poker book you perused was for Limit Holdem.
Nowadays Limit Holdem book sales is but a small percentage of the overall poker book market, but it’s still a highly popular game, and new, updated, material is being produced all the time. With that in mind here is my list for the 5 Best Limit Holdem Poker Books:
- Hold’ Em Poker for Advanced Players, by David Sklansky and Mason Malmuth
This is the original Limit Hold’ Em masterpiece, and even though the authors have you playing a very tight game, the overall strategies still apply in live poker games even up to the $20/$40 -online players will have difficulty even at the $1/$2 level simply because opponents are more aware online thanks to software that shows your statistics.
This is the first book any new player should pick up.
- Small Stakes Hold’ Em, by Ed Miller
I consider this book Hold’ Em Poker for Advanced Players’ remake, like a Hollywood movie with all new special effects and CGI. Small Stakes Hold’ Em delves a bit more into the math of the game, and adjusting to looser, more aggressive games that you find at the small stakes tables in casinos and online.
- Winning in Tough Hold’ Em Games, by Nick Grudzien and Geoff Welch
This is the first really in-depth look at what is going on in heads-up pots -which the vast majority of the pots you play will be even at the lower limits online and mid limits live. This book is not for the rank amateur, and definitely not for the math deficient; extremely boring, full of charts and equations… Precisely what a Limit Holdem book should be!
- Limit Hold’ Em: Winning Short Handed Strategies, by Terry Borer
Winning Short Handed Strategies focuses on the 6-max games that have become all the rage lately, and picks up on the heads-up pots concept of Winning in Tough Holdem Games.
- Way of the Poker Warrior, by Paul Hoppe
While this book is not a strategic manual per se, Hoppe is a serious Limit Holdem player and each chapter comes with hand examples, mostly Limit Holdem, to help drive home the points he was making. I was torn where to include Hoppe’s book because it spans a few different genres -psychology, general poker, Limit Holdem– so I decided to put him in with the Limit Holdem books.
